Long before Everant Studio and the systems on this site, there was a long stretch of direct client work. That's where I learned to understand a client's actual problem before touching a keyboard, and it's the foundation everything since has been built on.
I built Eales Web Design around the ability to work and travel wherever I wanted, while still building something real for actual clients. It worked well enough that at one point I was running a team of five, a mix of full-time people and freelancers I could rely on, with as many as ten projects going at once.
Running it that way meant the job was never just "build the website." Across different projects I was the sales conversation, the marketing plan, the SEO strategy, the content writer, the technical advisor, the consultant, the strategist, the designer and the developer, often all in the same week, sometimes the same call. The hardest part was never the code. It was being the person a client relied on for the sale, the design decisions and the technical execution all at once, with no one else to hand any one of those to.
Every client project started with a full design in Figma before a single line of the actual site was built: structure, layout, type and content signed off with the client first, so the build itself was execution against an agreed plan rather than improvisation in the browser. That habit is exactly where the design instincts behind everything on this site come from.
Hospitality taught me a related lesson from a different angle: staying calm and communicating clearly when everything is happening at once. Between the two, I learned as much about people as I learned about engineering: how to lead a hard decision with authority and trust rather than avoid it, and how to make sure that even the most difficult client came away feeling like they'd been treated fairly. I don't always get that right, but it's the standard I've tried to hold the whole client-facing side of my work to.
When AI tools started appearing, they forced a real rethink, not because I stopped enjoying the work, but because the economics of it stopped making sense. AI didn't necessarily make other freelancers better, but it made a lot more people believe they could compete, and the market raced to the bottom: people offering the same job for a fraction of what I was charging. That shift is what pushed me to pivot toward Everant Studio and the systems on this site: building and shipping my own ideas, and helping ambitious teams do the same.
